Ladybird, ladybird fly away home
My friend Daisuke and his wife Aki took me on an outing to Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. There were gigantic lanterns at every turn and I felt like a chihuahua looking up at them. Being a gobsmacked tourist, I was too busy looking at things around me to pay enough attention tossing my coins into the offering bin. I missed and the coin bounced off the side ominously... Turns out this little indiscretion would be my downfall. We drew fortunes and I got the worst grade "bad luck" reading. Is there even such a thing as grading bad luck? Evidently I couldn't just get a slap-on-the-wrist sort of "bad luck" but it had to be the stiletto sort that not only jabbed but also twisted and gouged. It was a relentless list, text crumpled in a dense mass on both sides of the paper, that just went on and on with countless ways how hope can be just squashed like a bug. I must have looked like I was going to dissolve into a pathetic puddle of tears because Daisuke hurriedly assured me a way out: I could tie the fortune to a rack and "leave" the fortune behind. But next time, he added as an afterthought, be sure to bring more money for the offerings. And look for the bigger offering bins to maximize my shooting range.
